Labrador Puppies

On March 10th we had some new arrives. Just the cutest Labrador puppies. Sam sire another great litter and out of our very own Female Blackberry. Just a great litter and Mom is doing excellent taken care of them. The have more than tripled the body weight and getting stronger every day. This is the first litter Sammy has ever gotten to see and personally I think he is one proud daddy. We are very Happy with the litter we have all three colors and three boy and four girls.

Going Barefoot

Here at Paint the Summit Farm we have been barefoot, but we have been a farrier barefoot or pasture trim. For many year I thought there can't be a difference and in those many years had many problems like white line, hole, cracks, flaring, and lameness. So less than six months ago I personal started studying the Natural Barefoot Trim. Boy have I learned a lot. Like how important the heel and frog are to a healthy foot. Truthfully I though my horses feet were pretty healthy but I was so wrong they were thrush infested and hardly any frog and the heel wasn't being used correctly and long toe low heel syndrome, contracted heels, and one mare had foundered. WOW...... what was I doing to these animals I loved so much.

Here is a picture of a front left hoof taken in October 2010 it was very wet then too. You can see holes is the sole and all that black is thrush, no frog.

The first thing I started with was treating the thrush and started with natural barefoot trim bring the heels back and cutting the toe back.

Here is the same hoof Feb 2011. Check out the frog look how much plumper it looks and it feels like a car tire, the heels have widen the sole has healed up and the thrush is gone. we are well on our way to a better hoof and a healthier horse.

I wish I took more before and after pictures but I didn't. My fillies feet are looking pretty awesome too. White hoof is a two year old Goddess of Chocolate. Dark or red hoof is a three year old Strawberry Rose Wine. I would recomend a good barefoot trimmer to any one. Have a great day and just check out barefoot trimming for yourself.

Training to do JR Hunt test

Sam has been training hard this year to take the JR hunt test. Here is a video of one of his retrieves. He is doing great. He is steady waiting for the command. Retrieving fast and hard and delivering it to hand. Labrador Retiever Puppies Have arrived

Puppies Arrived Sunday March 21, 2010 around 5 am. Dam Mathis Lady Shadow and her new puppies are owned by Aron & Elissa Mathis. They report that seven puppies and mom are doing well. This time they have 1 Black Male, 1 Chocolate Male, 1 Chocolate Female(sold), and 4 Black females.

Another great litter sired by Sam's Summer Ale. Sam has a Hunting pedigree with 7 hall of fame hunting dogs in his pedigree. Sam has been getting ready to take his JR Hunting test. So far he has given 100% effort in training sessions. Got good bird since. Has great lines and waste no time retrieving. Also great family dog with our three girls. Own by Micheal Perham and Lisa Wheelock

New Year

What to look forward to in the New Year. We have four great mares bred to Chocolate Domino for spring foals. Its like Christmas all over but no peaking at these gifts. We'll just have to wait and I am sure the mares will make us wait a couple extra days too. Feels like they like to catch by surprise. Even Sam got the chance to making surprise this year too. The people with the female dog Shadow loved there puppies so much that they have come back for a repeat breeding. The Labrador Retriever puppies with great hunting lines are due St. Patrick's Day, So these puppies will have a special Irish touch to them.
We have already been working hard on the property. We have been burning the large brush pile we made all summer. The girls have been having tons of fun sliding in the meadow cooking hot dogs and marshmallows on the fire.
Girl have a pair of working steers they are getting ready for 4-H this year. If you are interest in some bull calves to start your own team. There are two bull calves at the farm we got ours a steel at $25.00 a calf. go to the website and click on "Calf" to see pictures of them.
We made so wind chimes for Christmas presents this year 12 in all and kind of showed them off to a few friends. Dog days of summer

Well its August 6th and the dog days of summer should be upon us. But here in our neck of the woods we are starting to dry out a little and its feeling more like summer and it is almost over. Haven't cut to much hay hoping to get some done in the next few days while the sun shines. We have been cutting lots of fire wood though. I did get some pictures in between the rain.

So speaking of the dog days of summer here are the Canines in our lives. Sam is such a gentlemen love going out to work in the woods, checking the fence and wheeler rides are his favorite things to do. While Blackberry is a mother hen already keeping track of the kids.

While out checking fence and water damage from the last hard rain I got so interesting photos on grandpa"s land. Here is a photo of a moss cover rock wait a minute. I did have to do a double take on this one can you see the tip of a horse drawn plow. My grand fathers property now owned by my mother is like a farming treasure chest you'll never know what you'll find. I had to take a picture of this history that was almost camouflaged from the naked eye. Now out by the stream that runs through pasture I found this little guy. A crayfish. I had to run back to the house to get the camera to take his picture. I figured he would have run and hid by the time I got back. But the dog found him right off and all I had vision of is Scooby doo with the crab on is nose.

Boy when you say this is a pig pen. You think of really big mess. Well the pig pen looks just like that. There is so much mud with all the rain we have had this summer that I think the pig are sick of the mud. Here is a pic of the pigs in the mud.

John Deere a green and yellow tractor right. Well met our John Deer two Jeresy calves. One day the girls went up to the local farmer and were getting milk with Papa and they always go in to see the young stock and pet the cows. The next thing I know the girls are taking about how much fun it would be to raise a calf. Papa brings two right back to the farm now we have John and deer. The two older girls have been taking good care of them since day one. Leading and handling them every day I am very proud of these girls. The girls have done some reading up on oxen or working steer well have to see how far this goes.

As the youngest daughter says it feels like a farm now with the calves. She too has been helping out. I have to say the girls have been working hard this summer. We all can't wait for summer to get here but all summer we work hard for the winter.

Been a while since I posted

The last post I posted that there were new puppies well they have all grown and moved onto new homes. On our way to pick up our pigs we got to stop in and see the puppies in person. Shadow really did a great job mothering those pups they had nice round bellies and just perfect personalities It was really hard to not take one home. Here is a picture of them all sleeping after the girl played with them all.

So I mentioned pigs, well we decided to get pigs this year to raise. Boy, were they hard to find seamed like everyone had the same idear. So someone had told me about criagslist so I started searching for pigs lots of calling and everyone seamed sold out as soon as they posted. Finally I was the first caller and got some pigs ordered and was a nice person and ordered pigs for all the neighbors in Baltimore (were we are working on building our new house.) Thirteen pigs. We have had the pigs for over a month know and they are growing like weeds.

Speeking of Weeds the garden seams to be growing more of them insted of veggies. We put in an extra large garden so we could feed the pigs the extra produce plus fill our freezor for the winter with grocciers being so expensive and all. I finally found some time to weed the garden last weekend and get some mulch put down so the weed can't take over.

We have been working hard on our property. We have been sawing and milling and even making a shed with our new found lumber. Its a great feeling that we did all the steps ourselves. Here are a few pictures.

Here is a little stack of hemlock waiting to be milled and of course you can see the hard working dog following me around and trying to get into all the pictures. We can't get any of these log to mill without the use of a dependable tractor it may be small but boy can it do the job.

The best investment was our mill.

Here is a little load of lumber we milled. A shed made out of our fine lumber. can't wait to build the house. We will be camping out all summer to work on the property.

As you can see we have been very busy. Thanks to the rain hay can't be made so I am in catching up on other thing have a great day.

Puppies have arrived

I am a little late posting this but better late than never. Very exciting news, Shadow had here puppies on April fourth around 10:00 pm. Shadow and Sam had a wonderful litter of pups eight in all. One black male, two black females, two chocolate males, three yellow females. Here are some pictures of them 24 hours old and Shadow taken care of her new pups and Sam Playing ball. Sam is very good at ball as he keeps the middle child on her toes for soccer. He is a great defender and it quit hard to get the ball past him to shoot it in the goal. The Chocolate Goddess has arrived

March 18th 2009 at 11:00am Emma delivered the most beautiful chocolate bay tobiano filly sired by our very own Chocolate Domino. We are naming this filly after the Goddess of Chocolate "Ixcacao"(Esh kako). Since she is as sweet as chocolate and has all the colors to meet all the flavors of chocolate white for white chocolate, brown for milk chocolate, and black for dark chocolate. Ix also stands for little one or little girl, little woman. Here is a website that has the story of the Goddess of Chocolate http://www.goddessgift.com/goddess-myths/Mayan-goddess-chocolate.html. Its a pretty neat story and boils down to ''The Goddess of Chocolate reminds us that a luxurious world unfolds before your eyes if only you will take a moment to still your "busy-ness" and rejoice in those things which give you pleasure.'' So this filly represents the pleasure in my life.

Doggie News

I have been so busy training horses, raising children, and working on our land. Yes in the near future Paint The Summit Farm will be moving south. About a half an hour south of our current location. Very exciting but a lot of work as we are building everything ourselves.

The end of January our Chocolate Labrador Retriever Sam met up with his first girl friend. Shadow a very beautiful Black Labrador Retriever her and her family were looking for a mate. So the Beginning of April Sammy and Shadow may have there first litter of AKC reg Labrador Retriever puppies.

With meeting Shadow our family fell in love with her and missing the puppy Sam use to be. Over winter vacation from school we went to look at a litter of black lab puppies and of course we couldn't just look and came home with a beautiful little girl we have named Blackberry Wheat.

Here is the funny thing this pup was born 12-19-08 and was named Blackberry Wheat after a Beer And Sam's Summer Ale was also born March 29, 08 also named after a beer, and our filly born in April of 2008 was named Strawberry Rose Wine. 2008 was a funny year for a cool beverage. Mike says we can call the kennel The booze hound kennel and we'll only brew up the finest puppies in a few years as the labs are in training to be the best they can be hunting, service, agility and of course the best family dog ever.

Where has the year gone? I didn't get everything done I wanted to. I think I'll fit one last thing in before the new year. I promised myself I would do this. Today it got done.

As a trainer it seams like I am always working for the customer and there needs. Well I have wanted to do this for years now and set myself first. Chocolate Domino is Now under saddle and all the training and great times spent with him has paid off. He is a super sensible mount and we are going to have some more great times together. I am posting a few pictures of his first ride. Some of the pictures include stand on a loose rein being ridden on a loose rein and head and neck bends.

Yearlings in training

Boy horses are never to young to learn. Here are two Yearling fillies in training getting a good foundation so when they become old enough to ride or drive they will be already to move on. Ground work is everything to a horse. This is pretty much the cellar to your house if you don't build your cellar right the house will fall in or you will have to go back and fix the cellar and that is twice as much work after you have already built the house. So on to building the cellar.

First I teach all my horses to move there hind Quarters no mater the age. This is the engine and if you can't control it on the ground don't expect it to work under saddle. Then I teach them to move the front Quarters. This is your steering wheel and you are the one controlling not the horse. Many horses have a tie rod gone and the horse lean on you when you try to move them around. Believe me you don't want to care a horses front end its quiet heave as it has the head neck and thoughts big shoulders oh yeah don't for get those front legs that like to step on your toes. Teach them to carry their own weight and get out of your space.

Now I teach a lunging for respect 1 and 2. Now we are not lunging to get the horse tired we are teaching them something. We are teaching personal space, Liston to me because I am the heard mare, which all boils down to respect. After I teach this I go on to trust me I won't hurt you no mature how scary it is. Look at some of the amazing things you can do with your little ones.

Mind you this is not the first lesson but every thing I have done with these fillies has prepared them for almost anything I put in front or behind or on them. The Cinderella Pony

Cinderella purchased a new white pony for her collection of white driving and riding horses. Except he doesn't know how to work he only knows how to be handsome. Cinderella had contacted me to see if I had room for her new pony to start having some training done.

Cabillo started his training with me August 21st 2008. My girls also have been helping with the training of Cabillo. This is where he got the Cinderella pony from because he is white with long flowing mane and tail. Cabillo is owned by Ricque of Maine and she is having Cabillo trained for her Grand daughter age four. Who feel in love with Cabillo. So as of today Cabillo has had a months worth of training and is going to have a few more weeks of training to make his training more refined.
He is being ridden by all the girls ages 4, 7, and 10. Walk trot and canter and through some trail class stuff like a bridge and poles on the ground.
Cabillo is pulling a cart up and down the road also in a ring setting.

Here he is starting to pull the cart. It did take some time to get to this point but he was sure ready when it was time.

Yesterday Cabillo went out down the road for some more training. We meet a very large tractor on the road and he wasn't going very slow. Cabillo kept right on walking down the road. All was quiet then out pooped a large Shepard dog jumping on the end of his leash and Cabillo trot right along. We are getting almost home an I hear the train whistle get around the corner there is the train. Cabillo walked toward the train and then waited for it to be done passing. This little man amazed me today. when I started working with Cabillo I wasn't sure he was going to be a cart horse he was a little racy when nervous and wasn't sure about having me behind him. The other thing he liked to do was a little rear when confused with something . Yesterday he did none of these things and was a safe perfect little man. Great job Cabillo. This little pony is well on his way to pulling Cinderella's pumpkin to the ball.

Bella's MS Fancy Pants is a reg APHA/PtHA Chestnut tobiano filly Born April 26th 2008. Currently(9-12-08) Standing a bulky 12 hands and 398 pounds of muscle. This filly is a delight to work with Friendly and sweet with her own personality. She has the style and look of a great Hunter Jumper. She is very Athletic playing in the pasture.

She is out of our very own Paint the Summit Farm's Stallion Chocolate Domino. Great stallion with personality and is easy to handle. His breeding has everything from Hunter Jumper Sport horses to Reining cutting roping horses. Just the way I like them versatile. Chocolate is in training hope to get some photos of him soon.

Her Dam is Bella Rude, thoroughbred mare reg with the Jockey Club and she has some great horses in her background Northern Dance Canada's great thoroughbred stallion a Hall of Fame horse. Speaking of Hall of Fame horses she also goes back to Bold ruler and Native Dancer. Bella has had some other offsprings by some Quarter horse stallions and the have made great Hunter Jumper Dressage horse and won't expect anything less from this filly.

Training At Top O Hill Farm

I have been training horses at Top O' Hill Farm for Betsy Lirakis for many years now. I really enjoy working with the Curlies. Top O' Hill Farm is the first New England breeder of the amazing American Curly Horse. Betsy has been breeding Curlies since 1986. Betsy has been breeding some fine curly ponies and I've got the chance to train them. These ponies have personality and easy to work with and very much trainable. These curly ponies don't act ponish at all and this is what I love most about her curly ponies. If you have every been around a ponish pony you'll know what I am talking about. This is the main reason I purchased horses for my young girl all under the age of eleven. My girls have started going to work with me and helping me with these ponies. The girls have started riding and handling the ponies. These two ponies are delightful geldings named Acus and Job. Arcus being three years old and Job being four years old.

A new addition to the family

Sunday July 27th 2008 we added more chocolate to our live. You know chocolate sooths the soul. Our family has been looking for the perfect dog. Our family choose a handsome chocolate Lab with great hunting lines. Sam's Summer Ale will be reg with AKC. Sam for Short. He is 16 weeks in these pictures.

Flippen Domino has been sold to a great home in Randolph. Flippen was excited to have his very own boy. These two are going to be best buds. Flippen is enjoying his new home and he isn't to far from his birth place so I can watch him still grow. Congradulation Levi and Flippen on your new friendship and most important have fun.

In my last blog I had mention a truck for sale well it finally stopped raining long enough for some pictures. Dodge Ram 4x4 1500 v8 power windows/locks, brush/rain guard and many new parts asking 2000.00

Dominos Inde Cowgirl

Exciting news to report: Beth has send me photos of her beautiful filly. Dominos Inde Cowgirl was born in 2005 so she is now a three year old filly.Inde's dam is Bar B Wild a soild chestnut paint mare. Inde's sire is black and white paint Prodigals Domino Toby (Colby) who stood many years with Paint The Summit Farm and produce some great foals now most of them are under saddle. Beth did all of Inde's training and said she was easy to train and a since able mount. Inde is a stunning paint filly. You have done a great job Beth keep up the good work and enjoy that beautiful filly.

Took a little R & R

Just got back from a little vacation but not really. We worked most of the time and a tiny bit of playing. He worked for ourselves. Our new property needs clearing and the pastures need TLC to make more grass grow and of course fire wood, Oh the garden too. All the work in the gardens has paid off we have been eating some of our hard work and boy is it yummy. Broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini and summer squash.

Got some playing in, did a little fishing before the thunder storms rolled in. Caught some bull head cat fish up to Nap Pond. Canada geese where there with there young ones. Boy not afraid of people, someone must have been feeding them. We also got to see some wild life down on the farm. Some deer and huge flocks of turkey with the young averaging thirty plus in a flock. The hooting of an owl, the girls were hooting back and it would answer. Even got the Hubby out for a ride with me. Also rode the four wheelers too.

It was nice. Now aback to the old grind. We have a new truck to pay for and school is creeping up on us I am sure the girl are growing like weeds and will need new cloths.

Sparta and Nutmeg have found a new home with two seven year old boys in whitingham Vermont . Mrs. Parris has a boarding facility in whitingham, Vermont. Have fun with girls.

Making hay while the sunshines.

Our family has been working hard to get ready for winter. Seams like we can't wait for summer to come and the main thing we do is get ready for winter. We have planted a garden. Splitting our wood. Making hay to feed our beloved animals. So far its been a hard summer to make hay. We have had 26 rainy days the month of June out of thirty . That doesn't leave many day to make hay. July is here now and we have manged to get in a weekend of haying thanks to mother nature letting the sun to shine. We got in a quarter of our hay at only 289 bales. The fourth has came and went and our corn has made the grade of being knee high at fouth of July. We can't be all work with no play. Enjoy the day and don't for get to play.

Training

Been doing lots of training this month I had two beautiful girls in for training. Breeze came in for a refresher after having a gorgeous filly by Prodigals Domino Toby(Colby). This mare was nice and forward and very will to head out. she trained up really nice and Marilyn is have a ball with her."Thank you so much Lisa! Breeze's oldest daughter also came for some training. Zephry, she is ten years old this year. She like to stop and not go any more. She was telling her rider when the ride was over. she took a little work on the ground. Got her nice and respectful and went on to riding her and of course she tried her old ways but that wasn't much fun when I started to turn her head and made her butt move around the circle. Boy she thought that was to much work. so she did what I asked. Silly girl. Boy Marilyn she is a lot of fun to ride. Hope you have as much fun as I did. Enjoy

I have been thinking for a while about posting a farm blog. I think it gives you an inside view of the farm and what goes on here. Lots of work and dedication goes into running a farm. Working with horses brings me lots of pleasure and satisfaction that I am helping others with there horses and becoming best friends with there partners.

I have to beginner horses for sale. I have know these girls for years and they are great riding mounts. I purchased these girls from a friend that could no longer care for them. I am looking to place these girls in loving home. Sparta is a 20 yr old brown Standardbred mare thats standing around 15 hands. she is awful sweet and well mannered horses this girl would be a great confidence builder. Pictured here with my seven year old daughter riding. asking 300.00 because she paces my girl think its quite fun to pace her around the yard. also can be ridden western.

Nutmeg is a sorrel morgan/cross pony that is 18yrs old that has been there and done that. This pony neck reins and is standing about 13.2 hands tall this pony has good bone and substance to her so an adult can ride and feel fine on her. Pictured here with my oldest daughter at 10yrs old riding her. This pony can also go English too. Asking 800.00

Both of these mares are in good health and are sound. I have to many horses to keep them. Should have the coggins back this week and they had there feet trimmed Wednesday June 18th 2008. They are up to date on shots. All they need now is a partner to have fun with. Pictured to the right switching of the horses now the 7yr old is riding the pony and the 4yr old is riding Sparta.
